1.) Speak with your family.  In the event there is a donation situation, they ultimately give the ok to give the gift of life.

2.) Fill out a NY State donor registry card.

Concert Drama at Kleinhans Music Hall

On May 4th, at Kleinhans Music Hall, for one performance only, the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra will present the Defiant Requiem.  This is a concert drama that depicts the true story of a young Czech composer, Raphael Schaechter, who led fellow Terezin concentration camp prisoners in performances of Verdi's Requiem.  It begins at 3:00pm.

You will experience an emotional blend of Verdi's powerful masterpiece, images of its performances at Terezin, and narratives from performers who survived the war. The work will be conducted by Murry Sidlin, the creator and director of this project.

Schaechter presented Verdi's Requiem 16 times before being shipped to a death camp. At first, there was opposition to its performance by the Jews, some of whom felt it was a capitulation of their Jewishness, since the requiem is part of the Catholic Mass, but the Nazis were oblivious to the meaning of the mass and it permitted the Jews to sing what they dared not say: "Libera me" (set me free), "dies irae" (the day of wrath), "when all will be held accountable."  The 150 singers learned the music by rote because there was only 1 score, and personnel changed as members were shipped to the death camps.

Defiant Requiem is a tribute to those who were a part of this terrible event in history, and to the human spirit refusing to be dominated by evil.  The director and cast will be going to Terezin this summer to present this work at the former concentration camp.  It is a rare and special opportunity to be able to see it in Buffalo.

See Choir members Linda Yund, Joyce Cline, John Cline

                      or Jane Faruga for tickets.
